UFO Finds New Life as Betsey Johnson Doll

Most times I am inspired by others.  One view of another's vision can cast a horizon on your own.

I had the opportunity to browse through an estate sale and purchase fabric, thread, vintage tools, buttons, and UFOs from a truly eclectic talent.  There was so much this wonderful woman had left behind as I went through I felt I had to select items I would not normally purchase.  You could feel the creative passion in the UFOs and felt the need to see many through to the finish.

One in particular was a little odd attraction for me.  I collect vintage pincushions and asked to see some.  There was a box of unfinished fabric pincushions--not my favorite.  But there in the box was a face with doll hair pinned to the top of its head. That cotton face, hand drawn and stuffed with fiber fill--had to have that face.

When I went home with my extensive loot (and yes I went back for more), it was the first item I did something with. I immediately felt a pincushion was not right for this face--I had to bring it to life.  I cut off the round, cotton body, pulled off the curly doll hair and thought this is the face of Betsey Johnson!  For the collar, I grabbed a crocheted circle I could never part with--what I was making with that??
Pulled out my box of felted wool, I collect as I come across good quality- and had to go with the orange.  Betsey would have a coat, but it could not certainly be plain, so added a layering of pre-cut felt circles of tweed and multi-colors then added vintage buttons to top the fabrication off. The coat was lined with pink fleece and to take it over the top, added a few lone fabric buttons.

Her hair had to be golden and natural! From my stash, sewed gold fringe and cotton embroidery floss to small precut felt circles, layering in rows.  Of course, that face required we needed to add some pink to the hair!

Betsey could not be complete without some flounce and fabric mix.  So the skirt has purple plaid, sparkle tulle, and pink fringe.  Next up after extensive investigation on doll bodies--this is my first miniature doll-- adding the arms and legs.
